Couples seek therapy for a variety of reasons. A partner may feel the lack of effective communication is creating frustration, anger and emotional distance. They need skills to improve speaking up and listening to each other, help to learn effective problem-solving and how to revive excitement and intimacy in their relationship.
Another challenge couples bring to therapy is how to talk about sensitive topics such as sex, money, anger, parenting, in-laws, step-families, and major life changes such as births, deaths, relocating for work, “empty nest” and retirement. Many couples struggle to balance family and work responsibilities, to manage chronic health problems, substance abuse, gambling or pornography addictions and co-dependency. They may discover that their partner has been unfaithful or secretive about sex or finances which gives rise to intense feelings of betrayal, hurt and anger.
Couple therapy provides a safe place to talk about these sensitive topics with a skilled, empathic listener that allows each partner to move beyond these unsatisfying and painful experiences and grow.
"A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’
comes together. It is when an imperfect couple
learns to enjoy their differences."
~ Dave Meurer, Humorist and Author
