Couples seek therapy for a variety of reasons. A partner may feel the lack of caring and effective communication are creating frustration, anger and emotional distance. They need skills to improve speaking up and listening to each other. They want help learning effective problem-solving and how to revive excitement and intimacy in their relationship.
Another challenge couples bring to therapy is how to talk about sensitive topics such as sex, money, anger, parenting, in-laws, step-families, and major life changes such as births, deaths, “empty nest”, separation and divorce, coming out, transgender transitioning, relocating for work and retirement. Many couples struggle to balance family and work responsibilities, manage chronic health problems, substance abuse, gambling or pornography addictions and co-dependency. They may discover their partner has been unfaithful or secretive about sex or finances which give rise to intense feelings of betrayal, hurt and anger.
Couple therapy provides a safe, confidential place to talk about sensitive topics with a skilled, empathic listener, allowing each partner to be heard, appreciated and acknowledged, and to move beyond unsatisfying, painful experiences and grow.
"A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’
comes together. It is when an imperfect couple
learns to enjoy their differences."
~ Dave Meurer, Humorist and Author
